I have been blessed to enjoy a long and successful professional career, and in my profession, some would say celebrity. I have served as a lawyer, counselor, confidante, psychiatrist, and priest to professional luminaries and their even more notable clients. I traveled the country for 40 years representing financial professionals, speaking at national events, conversing with numerous famous plane seatmates (including sharing a first-class cabin with a Hall of Fame rock band), receiving various awards/recognitions, and even performing stand-up comedy.

As I approach the end of my professional career, I want to provide a heartfelt message to both younger people who are about to begin their careers and to those older who are in the midst or end of their professional journey (regardless of their chosen profession or vocation).

The Ladder (The Precarious Climb to Success) is a brutally honest and introspective memoir; a happenstance-ridden journey written with the benefit (and pain) of hindsight. The Ladder does not seek to judge, preach, or convert. Through a series of short, easy-to-read vignettes, it recounts the highs, lows, successes, and failures of my extremely bumpy journey.

In The Ladder, I recount the uniquely paradoxical odyssey of a nationally recognized investment industry lawyer and former industry magazine columnist who mistakenly conflated business and personal success, culminating with the eventual Awakening of a broken man that no one would have ever assumed needed fixing. With regret, until a late-in-life transformation, I lived a life of work first, family second, and God a distant third.

I did not write The Ladder for my own personal profit or ego-I have been there, done that. As I recount in The Ladder, money and ego were ultimately unfulfilling. I am hopeful that my message will help countless individuals achieve a more fulfilling work-life balance.
